A short video explaining the latest labour market estimates is available on the ONS YouTube channel. It shows:

  • Unemployment in December 2011 to February 2012 was 2.65 million, down 35,000 on the previous three months. Employment was 29.17 million (up 53,000) and inactivity stood at 9.27 million (down 25,000).

  • Comparing December 2011 to February 2012 with the same period a year earlier, unemployment had risen by 172,000 and employment had fallen by 57,000.

    The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

    • are well explained and readily accessible;
    • are produced according to sound methods; and
    • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest.

    Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.
