Geographical breakdown: UK

  • The seasonally adjusted Index of Services decreased by 0.6 per cent in June 2012 compared with June 2011.

  • Three of the four service sector components decreased in the most recent month compared with the same month a year ago.

  • Business services & finance decreased by 1.5 per cent and transport storage & communication decreased by 2.2 per cent. These were the largest contributions to the decrease.

  • Between May 2012 and June 2012, service sector output decreased by 1.7 per cent.

  • The earliest period open for revision in this release is April 2012.

  • In 2012, the end of May bank holiday was moved to June and there was an additional bank holiday added to June. These changes resulted in two less working days in June, which may have been a contributing factor to the relatively weak month on month and month on a year ago growth rates for June.

Shows the monthly movements in gross value added for the service industries, which overall account for around 75 per cent of UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
