The total volume of construction output remained broadly flat, increasing by 0.2 per cent (+£23m) in November compared with the estimate for October, moving to £9,207m (constant price, not seasonally adjusted). It fell slightly, by 1.6 per cent (-£148m), compared with November 2010.

The following compares the total output volume for the three months from September to November with that of the same three months one year ago, in constant prices, not seasonally adjusted:

  • The volume of construction output fell by 1.2 per cent (-£338m). New work fell by 1.3 per cent (-£241m) and repair and maintenance fell by 1.0 per cent (-£97m).

  • The only increases were in new infrastructure work, which increased by 14.7 per cent (+£436m); private commercial new work, which increased by 2.8 per cent (+£178m); and non-housing repair and maintenance, which increased by 4.0 per cent (+£189m).

  • New public non-housing work showed the largest fall of 14.9 per cent (-£536m).

This month, ONS has published two new tables:

  • An analysis of output in current prices by size of business. This will be published quarterly, in response to user feedback.

  • Basic quality information for the current price series. This will be published monthly, to help improve transparency around data quality.

Background notes

  1. The new monthly output survey commenced in January 2010, replacing the existing survey which was carried out quarterly.

  2. Seasonally adjusted monthly estimates will not be available until sufficient monthly estimates have been produced (about three years of estimates are required).

  3. All values, including the graph have been produced using estimates in constant prices (KP), not seasonally adjusted.
