The total volume of construction output fell by 2.3 per cent in January 2012 compared with January 2011 (constant prices, not seasonally adjusted).

The following compares the total output volume for the three months from November 2011 to January 2012 with that of the same three months one year earlier, in constant prices, not seasonally adjusted:

• Overall, the volume of construction output grew by 0.6 per cent. Of the two main components, new work grew by 0.7 per cent and repair and maintenance rose by 0.4 per cent.
   
• The largest increase (11.1 per cent) was new infrastructure work.
  
• New public non-housing showed the largest percentage fall of 15.4 per cent.   

The Q4 2011/Q3 2011 change in the constant price, seasonally adjusted series has been revised to a slight fall of 0.2 per cent, up from the original estimate of a 0.5 per cent fall.

Background notes

1. The new monthly output survey commenced in January 2010.

2. For this publication, the quarterly seasonal adjustment methodolgy has been updated and applied to the entire seasonally adjusted quarterly series. Last month's data, which did not include these revisions, is available as part of the Q4/December 2011 Output in the Construction Industry bulletin.

3. Seasonally adjusted monthly estimates will not be available until enough monthly estimates have been produced (about 3 years of estimates are required). Therefore, figures in this release do not make any month on month comparisons.

4. All monthly values, including the graph, have been produced using estimates in constant prices (KP), not seasonally adjusted.
