In this release

This release contains Local Characteristics tables on the topic of travel to work cross-tabulated with one or more topics from the census. Tables are provided for Output Areas (OA) in England and Wales.

There are 26 Local Characteristics tables in this release at Output Area level. In addition to the Local Characteristics tables, there is one Quick Statistics table produced at Output Area level and above. Each table can be accessed directly using the links in the reference table (47 Kb Excel sheet) .

These tables along with all Detailed Characteristics and Local Characteristics tables from previous releases are available from the Nomis website.

The OA is the lowest level of geography for which census estimates are produced and Local Characteristics tables provide the greatest level of detail possible for local areas.

More information about OAs and other geographic areas is available from ONS Geography.

The tables provided in this release supplement the Detailed Characteristics tables on travel to work, also published on 26 March 2014. These releases coincide with the release of Detailed Characteristics tables focusing on the topic of Approximated Social Grade.

Due to the level of detail included in Local Characteristics tables, and the lower level of geography, in order to prevent disclosure of individuals' information some classifications have been collapsed.  As far as possible comparability with Detailed Characteristics tables has been retained.

Analysis on the travel to work topic has been provided at higher geographic levels in two short stories that accompany the Detailed Characteristics release:

Cycling to work

Distance travelled to work

Further information about the census estimates, including details about the methodology used and information about how other population sub-groups are counted and defined, is available in the 2011 Census user guide.

Further information on the fitness for purpose of the statistics in this release can be found in the Quality and Methodology (157.6 Kb Pdf) Information paper.

These National Statistics are produced to high professional standards and released according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
