In this release

This release provides 2011 Census estimates for postcodes in England and Wales. These summary figures give estimates of the number of usual residents, by sex, and the number of households with at least one usual resident, for each unit postcode at as census day, 27 March 2011.

As the purpose of this product is to provide counts of usual residents by postcode, postcodes which do not contain usual residents are omitted.

The estimates are available to download in csv format. The single downloadable zip file has data files containing:

  • for each postcode, estimates of the number of usual residents (total, males, females) and the number of households with at least one usual resident

  • for each split postcode, the corresponding Output Area, the total number of usual residents in the postcode, and an indicator of the percentage of each postcode that is in the corresponding Output Area.

Definitions and supporting information to help use the data are also included in a plain text file.

To protect the confidentiality of individuals information these summary figures provide the most level of detail from the census for unit postcodes. They may be used in combination with other published statistics for Output Areas should users wish to perform their own analysis at postcode level.

Further information about the census estimates, including details about the methodology used and information about how other population sub-groups are counted and defined, is available in the 2011 Census user guide.

Further information on the fitness for purpose of the statistics in this release can be found in the Quality and Methodology Information paper (157.6 Kb Pdf) .
