What do the 2001 Census and 2011 Census tell us about households?

 

1. Household spaces* with no usual residents increased by 185,000 between 2001 and 2011

*A household space is the accommodation used or available for use by an individual household.

 

2. 18% of occupied household spaces were privately rented in 2011, up from 12% in 2001

  

3. 25% rise in households with 6 or more people between 2001 and 2011

   

4. Almost 30% of households included dependent children

   

5. In comparison, average household size was highest in Northern Ireland in 2011
