There were 1,390,000 working days lost through labour disputes in 2011. This is the highest number of working days lost since 1990 when 1,903,000 days were lost, and is mostly attributable to large scale strikes in the public sector.
There were 149 stoppages of work because of labour disputes in 2011. This compares with 92 stoppages in 2010 and 98 stoppages in 2009.
The majority of working days lost (92 per cent) were in the public sector. This is also reflected in the number of total stoppages (149), with 59 per cent in the public sector and 41 per cent in the private sector.
Wage disputes accounted for 95 per cent of working days lost.
