Stephen Penneck, Director General of ONS spoke at the debate on 'Making Better Use of Public Data' organised by The Foundation for Science and Technology at the Royal Society on 8 June 2011.

The Earl of Selborne, the Chairman of The Foundation, chaired the debate. Professor Paul Boyle and Baroness O’ Neil of Bengarve also spoke.

The audience, which included members from both Houses of Parliament, Whitehall departments, Devolved Administrations, Research Councils, and senior managers from industry and the research community, were then invited to comment and put questions to the speakers.

The debate was lively with participants agreeing that better use could be made of public data but that confidentiality must be maintained and its provenance protected.
