Alex Galea (business letters, 11 November 2012) suggests that ONS will align the formulae of the retail prices index (RPI) with those used in the consumer prices index, and that this change will be implemented in March.

In fact, the National Statistician is still seeking users’ views on options for improving the formulation of the RPI by means of an open consultation, which hardly amounts to “subterfuge”. The consultation invites views on the statistical merits of a range of options – including one for no change – and there is no pre-determined outcome.

The consultation does not close until 30 November 2012, and It is important to ONS that users of consumer price indices send their views on the options. These can be sent to:
