Letter for publication in response to an article in the Daily Mail, 11 December 2013

Your article "UK Population 'to hit 132 million by 2112'" (Mail, 11 December 2013)  is misleading. If "current trends" in migration, fertility and life expectancy persist the UK population will reach 93 million by 2122. You are right to say that ONS publishes variants to its projections based on different migration, fertility and life expectancy assumptions. The UK population could reach 132 million if there were higher than expected levels in migration, fertility and life expectancy.

Yours faithfully,
