Steve Doughty's article ('Whitehall cover-up on unwed mothers', 24 August) contained one major factual inaccuracy. His claim that data-gatherers are 'concealing vital information which demonstrates the success of married parents' is untrue. The Office for National Statistics will continue to report the number of births within, and outside, marriages and civil partnerships. We will also continue to report the number of births to civil partnerships where rules on disclosure of data allow.
