Urban Audit

The Urban Audit is a European Commission sponsored project to provide reliable and comparative information on selected urban areas, described as cities. The project has the following objectives:

  • Provide comparable statistics in order to identify policy priorities.

  • Allow benchmarking at the European level.

  • Identify cities which act as an engine of growth for their region.

  • Provide descriptive information on inner cities structures and on hinterland regions.

The Urban Audit was first set up in the 1990s as a pilot project, in a cooperative action between Eurostat and the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG Regio). Since then the data collected has become a significant source of information for important policy decisions by the European Union.
