Assigning life events data to sub-national areas: an assessment of a change to the methodology

This report investigates the impact on live births and death statistics of calculating rates using two different methods for assigning these life events data to higher administrative and health geographies in England and Wales. The two different methods for assigning geographical areas are the ONS Postcode Directory (ONSPD), which has historically been used, and the National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL), which is the approved method for use in the production of National Statistics. The report finds that the two methods generate comparable results and use of the NSPL should continue.
