This branch is responsible for producing direct volume measures of output for publicly funded Healthcare, Education, Social Care, Social Security Administration, and Public Order and Safety. Direct volume measures are based on cost-weighted activity data - for example, medical procedures performed or pupils taught - as opposed to indirect measures of output volume based on deflated expenditure.
The branch leads on the production of annual productivity releases for Healthcare and Education, including quality adjustments, as well as supporting the Development team's production of the annual article on Total Public Service Productivity. Output measures are regularly reviewed and developed in productivity articles, in conjunction with the Development Branch and service area experts and practitioners. Once sufficiently developed, these improvements are then submitted for inclusion in estimates of government output volume in the UK National Accounts.
