Purpose 

The information collected from the Monthly Inquiry for Index of Import Prices (IPI) is used to compile the Import Price Indices, which are a series of economic indicators that measure the price movement of goods imported into the UK.

They help monitor and measure inflation and are used in compiling the National Accounts.

  • Selection Criteria - UK trading businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE

  • Population - All UK manufacturing businesses that record import activity with HM Revenue & Customs

  • Sample - Approximately 2,500

  • Frequency - Monthly

Where is the data published?

The Import Price Indices are published by ONS as part of the Producer Price Indices.
