Survey at a glance

Purpose

The Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) replaces two existing surveys, the Business Register Survey and the Annual Business Inquiry - Part 1.

The BRES has two purposes, collecting data to update local unit information and business structures on the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) and producing annual employment statistics which are published via the Nomis website.

It is important that the information held on the IDBR is correct as it is a comprehensive list of UK businesses, which ONS and other government departments use as a sampling frame for business surveys.

It is also a key data source for analyses of business activity.

  • Selection Criteria - GB trading businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE.  NI data is received direct from DETINI which we use to create UK estimates

  • Population - Approximately  1,992,000

  • Sample - Approximately 82,000

  • Frequency - Annually

Where is the data published?

Annual Employment statistics are published via the Nomis website.

ONS publish high level UK/GB estimates, together with a Statistical Bulletin
