The commodity analysis in table 5 is based on returns of total retail sales from the panel of 5,000 businesses plus the commodity sales breakdown from around 31 of the largest retailers that sell a mix of commodities. The additional information from the 31 largest retailers is used to distribute sales more accurately into the four specialist headings noted in table 5.

Selected historical series of labour productivity on as consistent a basis as possible with those in the quarterly Labour Productivity release. At the present time this includes estimates for output per worker, per job and per hour for the whole economy and for the production, manufacturing and services industries. Annual estimates for most series are provided back to 1948, and quarterly estimates have also been extended where possible, for example, manufacturing output per job has been extended by 18 years back to 1960 and manufacturing output per hour has been extended back by 24 years to 1970. Headline unit labour costs and unit wage costs have also been extended considerably further back.
