Labour Force Survey

Region and Country Profiles provides a source of essential statistics for the regions of England and the constituent countries of the UK (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The tables provide a wide range of economy and labour market statistics to compare the countries, regions and local authority areas.

This set of tables contains the latest public sector employment estimates. For most sources that contribute to these statistics, the employment is reported for a specific day in March 2013. The public sector comprises central government, local government and public corporations as defined for the UK National Accounts. Estimates of public sector employment are provided on a headcount and full-time equivalent basis for sectors and industries, and also by region on a headcount basis only. In addition, Civil Service employment is provided by government department and agency. Employment in Executive Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) is provided, aggregated by sponsoring department. Since the inclusion of some financial institutions in the public sector in 2009, estimates for public sector employment and employment in public corporations have been provided with and without these financial institutions. Estimates of private sector employment are provided.

These cover economic activity, employment, unemployment and economic inactivity from the LFS. Time series estimates for the three month period from March 1992 to May 1992 onwards are also available in these tables.

Tables containing annual National Statistics of employment by age for regions and countries of the UK, based on the Annual Population Survey, are available in the Headline Indicator tables HI01-HI11.

These tables also contain historic data for the three month periods from July 2006 to September 2006 onwards. Tables containing annual National Statistics of inactivity by age for regions and countries of the UK, based on the Annual Population Survey, are available in the Headline Indicator tables HI01-HI11.

Regional labour market summary (employment, unemployment, economic activity and inactivity).

Labour Force Survey summary (employment, unemployment and inactivity) for men aged from 16 to 64 and women aged from 16 to 59. The employment and inactivity rates shown in this table were the headline employment and inactivity rates until August 2010, when ONS replaced these headlines rates with rates for those aged from 16 to 64 for both men and women. These new headline rates for those aged from 16 to 64 are shown in Table A02. Claimant Count revisions triangle. The Claimant Count measures the number of people claiming benefits principally for the reason of being unemployed. Since October 1996 it has been a count of the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Reconciliation of estimates of employment and jobs. This spreadsheet reconciles estimates of workforce jobs (derived primarily from employer surveys) with estimates of employment (derived from the Labour Force Survey). The spreadsheet is updated in those months when estimates of workforce jobs are published
