The report is the first snapshot of life in the UK to be delivered by the Measuring National Well-being programme and will be updated and published annually. Well-being is discussed in terms of the economy, people and the environment. Information such as the unemployment rate or number of crimes against the person are presented alongside data on people’s thoughts and feelings, for example, satisfaction with our jobs or leisure time and fear of crime. This article will look at young people aged 16 to 24 who are unemployed in the UK and how this has changed since the 1980s, breaking the goup into those who are still in full-time education and those that have left full-time education. Unemloyment rates for those that have left full-time education are considered by level of qualification. The difference between the unempoyment rate and proportion is explained with reference to regional and EU comparisions. Finally, this article looks at young people claiming Job Seeker's Allowance and what type of occupation they are seeking.

The report examines the gross output and GVA of the tourism industries before examining trends and characteristics of employment in those industries. The report also provides an analysis of the demography of tourism industries in terms of the size of firms.

This article examines the characteristics of foreign-born people living in the UK, how they differ between regions and countries, and from people that were born in the UK. Demographic, social and economic characteristics are examined using data from the Annual Population Survey, 2009 (APS). The article comprises two sections. The first section explores each characteristic individually, looking at how the foreign-born population differs to UK-born population, comparing across regions. The second presents a profile for each of the English regions, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
