Population Estimates by Marital Status

Population estimates by marital status (that is, the estimated number of people in England and Wales who are married, widowed or divorced) are produced by using information on births, deaths and migration to update census-based estimates of the resident population by marital status. The estimates are constrained to the national population estimates.

A detailed explanation of the methods used is provided in the Population Estimates by Marital Status (219.9 Kb Pdf) .

The approach adopted for estimates for England and Wales is compared with the approach for other parts of the UK in the Population Estimates by Marital Status: Methods and Availability across UK Countries report (48.1 Kb Pdf) .
