Population Definitions

One strand of work that resulted from the 2001 Census was the need to think more carefully about population definitions, both in the intercensal period and in the design of the 2011 Census. ONSCD has been involved with Census in the proposed design of the 2011 Census, championing a number of new questions including, widening the census base to include anyone intending to be in England and Wales for three months or more; questions on second residence; year and month of arrival for overseas born; and improvements to the address one year ago question. The aim is to be able to produce population outputs based on different definitions from the 2011 Census. View an update of the population definitions in the Downloads section.
