As well as improving the sources and methods used in estimating migration, and therefore population, the programme includes work to enhance the use of demographic analysis.
Specific aims include exploring the requirements for population base definitions in addition to 'usual residence,' and using demographic analysis to better understand more complex living arrangements. Both of these areas are key inputs to the 2011 Census.
Analysis is also being carried out into demographic patterns over the intercensal decade, in particular for sex ratios and fertility rates. These analyses will help in quality assuring improvements made to the population estimates. In the medium term this work may help in improving population estimation and quality assuring 2011 Census.
