Indicative Estimates from 30 November 2009

The ONS Centre for Demography (ONSCD) is developing a package of improvements to the methodology used for calculating population estimates. The improvements impact on previously published population estimates leading to revisions to data, including revised mid-2002 to mid-2008 local authority population estimates to be published in May 2010. These improvements will feed into the 2008-based Subnational Population Projections, which will also be published in May 2010.

As part of the quality assurance process for these improvements, ONSCD has undertaken an exercise seeking users' views on the impact of the improvements to the local authority population estimates developed so far. This exercise ran from 30 November 2009 to 18 January 2010. Further information on this user engagement can be found in this section.

To support this user engagement the Office for National Statistics (ONS) held a series of joint roadshows in December 2009 to communicate the latest work being carried out to improve population statistics through the 2011 Census and the Improving Migration and Population Statistics projects. Further details of these seminars can be found in the related links section.

ONS also concurrently conducted its normal biennial consultation, with local authorities and primary care organisations, on the migration assumptions used in the Subnational Population Projections. Further details on this consultation can be found in the related links section.
