Improvements to 2008 Migration and Population Statistics

ONS have introduced a package of improvements to migration and population statistics.

This package has been introduced as part of a cross-government programme to improve migration statistics.

The improvements impact on previously published population estimates leading to revisions, including revised mid-2002 to mid-2008 local authority population estimates for England and Wales.

These revised estimates were published on 13 May 2010, and a link to them can be found in the related links section.

The links below provide a range of supporting information, charts, and tables to accompany the package of improvements.

This information includes results of an exercise seeking users' views on the impact of the improvements to the local authority population estimates that ran from 30 November 2009 to 18 January 2010. This user engagement was the culmination of an extensive quality assurance exercise for the estimates.

These improvements have fed into the 2008-based Subnational Population Projections, which were published on 27 May 2010.

The improved methods will also be used to calculate mid-2009 population estimates which will be published on 24 June 2010.

Later in 2010 we will be presenting our intentions for the next phase of the Migration Statistics Improvement Programme, a major part of which is likely to be the greater use of administrative data to produce migration and population estimates.

We will be supporting discussions on the next phase of the Programme with a series of seminars in September to October 2010; these will be announced in due course.
