GSS MAC Further information

The GSS Methodology Advisory Committee (MAC) is normally held twice a year in May and November at the ONS London Office.

A call for abstracts is made around four months before each meeting, though abstracts can be submitted at any time. Four or five abstracts are then chosen for each meeting. The deadline for the finished papers is around six weeks before the meeting to give the committee members enough time to prepare feedback for the authors.

At each meeting the author of the paper will present a short introduction to the paper, followed by some feedback from a nominated discussant of the committee, before the discussion is opened up to the whole of the committee. Around 45 minutes is dedicated to each paper.

The MAC provides advice and does not set policy or standards.

If you’re a member of the GSS and would like to share some methodological news or would like some advice on a particular problem, please contact the committee secretary, Mark Hogan (
