Area and rural-urban classifications

There are three main types of area classification used to support the production of Official Statistics.

Area Classifications

Area classifications for Great Britain have been produced after every census since 1971, extending to the entire UK after 2001

2011 Rural-Urban Classifications

The 2011 rural-urban classification provides a rural / urban view of datasets at output area (OA), super output area (SOA) and ward level
