Bulletin 2013/10: Rural-Urban Classification, August 2013

2011 rural-urban classifications for small area geographies in England and Wales have been released today. They provide a rural/urban view of datasets at 2011 Output Area (OA), Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) and Middle Layer Super Output Area (MSOA) level. The classifications are revised versions of those produced after the 2001 Census, but with additional detail in the urban domain. They were created by the University of Sheffield on behalf of a government working group.

2011 Census data (Quick and Key Statistics that provide estimates of populations within local authorities that live in types of rural and urban areas identified in the OA level classification) are now available via the Nomis website

The classifications (OA, LSOA and MSOA) can be downloaded from the Open Geography Portal in the 'Products' section under the 'Download Products' tab. A user guide and methodology paper are also available from the portal in the 'Documents' section under the 'Download Products' tab.
