Report describing the ESRC Review of Government Social Classifications

This is a report of the review jointly sponsored by the Office for National Statistics and Economic and Social Research Council into the Government social classifications, Social Class based on Occupation (the Registrar General's Social Class) and Socio-Economic Groups (SEG).

The Government accepted the main recommendations for a new classification to be called National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC), which will replace RGSC and SEG.

The report describes the interim version of NS-SEC which was based on the 1990 edition of the Standard Occupational Classification.

The final version of NS-SEC, which is based on the Standard Occupational Classification 2000, was published in March 2001.
