First release of 2011 Census statistics

First phase

The first release of statistics from the 2011 Census was published on 16 July 2012. The latest, unrounded, version of the release is now available. The statistics include the elements:

  • usually resident  census population estimates for England  and for Wales, and for England and Wales, at single year of age, and sex,

  • usually resident  census population estimates for England and for Wales at regional level, and local authority level, by five year age bands and sex,

  • estimates of occupied households for England and for Wales at country, regional and local authority level.

ONS has provided an animated visualisation to look at the population results alongside the first release of 2011 Census statistics. The population pyramid allows users to browse statistics, comparing age and sex distributions across England and across Wales, and to compare two areas simultaneously.

Population pyramids are available for England and Wales combined, England and Wales separately, and sub-national layers. Users can interactively explore the size and structure of each area, actively interrogating age bands, track change from 2001 and export images for incorporation in analysis.

A population and household estimates statistical bulletin accompanied the first release of 2011 Census statistics.

2011 Census first release tables are available to download.

Second phase

Published on 22 October 2012 - view the statistical bulletin.

This phase includes outputs about second addresses for every local authority in England and Wales. It comprises:

  • information about the people who live there for at least 30 days a year but are usually resident elsewhere, and

  • information about people usually resident in that authority, but who live elsewhere for at least 30 days a year.

These outputs will provide information by age, sex, and type of second address (e.g. whether the address is used when working or as a holiday home).

Third phase

Published on 23 November 2012 - view the statistical bulletin.

Population estimates for England and Wales by output areas and wards.

This release will provide the population estimates, initially released in July 2012, at a lower geographic level. The release comprises:

  • usually resident census population estimates for England and for Wales at output area level and ward level, by five year age bands and sex, and

  • estimates of occupied households for England and for Wales at country, at output area level, and ward level.
