Life events data

Related links

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) holds individual records data on a range of life events topics, from birth and death registrations, to conceptions, cancer diagnoses, marriages, divorces and civil partnerships for England and Wales (apart from cancer which is England only).

Most information has been collected on a compulsory basis although some details are provided voluntarily.

For all life events topics, ONS processes and tabulates the data, then publishes statistics on a regular basis to agreed timetables.

Births

Births data for England and Wales are available in electronic format from 1963 to present. Figures are published on an annual basis with the first release of data within the birth summary tables

The main analyses of births data are by mother’s age, area of residence and marital status. Other variables are also available.

ONS estimates the age at conception for all births and legal abortions, and publishes figures for conceptions by mother’s age, area of residence and marital status.

ONS also publishes statistics on popular baby names.

Deaths

Deaths data for England and Wales are available in electronic format from 1959 to present. Figures are published on a weekly, monthly and annual basis with the first release data within the death registrations summary tables.

The main analyses of mortality data are by age, sex, area of residence and cause of death. Other variables are also available.

In addition to the standard registrations database, ONS maintains a database for deaths related to drug poisoning.

Annual statistics are also produced on avoidable mortality, excess winter mortality, life expectancy at birth and at age 65, alcohol-related deaths and suicides.

The death records of children under 18 are linked to their birth records and are used for analyses of child mortality, gestation-specific infant mortality and unexplained deaths in infancy.

Cancer Diagnoses

Cancer registrations data for England are available in electronic format from 1971 to present. Figures are published on an annual basis.

The main analyses of cancer registration (or cancer incidence) data are by age, sex, area of residence and site of cancer. Other variables are also available.

In addition to the standard cancer incidence database, ONS publishes a range of cancer survival statistics for England, in collaboration with the Cancer Research UK Cancer Survival Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Marriages, Divorces and Civil Partnerships

ONS publishes statistics on marriages, divorces for England and Wales and civil partnership formations and dissolutions for the UK.

The main analyses of marriage, divorce and civil partnership statistics are by age, sex and previous marital status. Other variables are also available.

UK Data

UK figures for births, deaths, marriages, divorces, civil partnership formation and dissolutions are available in the Vital Statistics: Population and Health Reference Tables.

Geographical Breakdown

Statistics are available on a country basis, and at a range of sub-national geographical breakdowns depending on the availability of postcode on the registration record.

Examples of geographical breakdowns include: the English regions, counties/unitary authorities, local authority districts, clinical commissioning groups for England.

Bespoke geographical tabulations can also be provided.
