In 2010 the Government made a commitment that it would become the "greenest ever" and action on Sustainable Development was organised under the umbrella "Greening Government Commitments".
As part of this commitment we will be publishing figures on our real-time energy consumption for our headquarters:

Government's key outcome from the commitments is to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25% from the whole estate. As an organisation, good progress has been made towards this target by introducing a number of measures including:

Installation of a new centralised boiler system at its Titchfield site

Installation of a dual fuel (wood or gas) Biomass boiler system at its Newport site

Improved controls over energy consumption using Automatic Meter Readings and Building Management Systems to target consumption in specific areas

Aligning operating temperatures for general office space and server rooms with best practice

Shutting down buildings and systems over periods of low demand.
Headquarters energy saving projects
ONS headquarters are based in Newport, South Wales on a 6.5 hectare site shared with the Intellectual Property Office. ONS buildings provide 20,937m2 of space for 1,750 staff.
ONS has put a number of measures in place to save energy:

Replace life-expired gas boilers with dual fuel biomass boilers for space heating and domestic hot water, burning wood pellet as the first choice fuel

Installed voltage optimisation equipment

Replaced car park lighting with energy efficient fittings and installed programmable timers to ensure lights are only on when required

Installed programmable timers on water boilers to ensure availability of hot water matches occupancy patterns

Revised computer room cooling temperatures

Implemented an optimal core hours window for heating and domestic hot water production

Replaced single glazed metal frame windows with UPVC double glazed windows and installed cavity insulation

Installed draft excluding curtains on loading bay doors

Revised office lighting design for refurbished areas to reduce light fittings and introduce LED light fittings
