Response

You have requested population information relating to the year 2012 under the Freedom of Information Act. The latest population estimates available relate to the year 2011 and are from the 2011 Census. Statistics from the 2011 Census in England and Wales will be freely available on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website in accordance with a planned timetable for release.

Your request includes a requirement for UK data. ONS will collate and publish UK level statistics once each census office has published. ONS is responsible for the census in England and Wales. The census in Scotland is the responsibility of National Records Scotland and in Northern Ireland the census is the responsibility of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency. At this stage ONS has published some UK and constituent country population estimates by sex and five-year age bands and these are available from:
http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-270247

More detailed UK statistics such as those on Country of Birth are not available yet although, as detailed below, ONS has published some statistics for England and Wales.

With regard to your particular request for a number of pieces of information on Polish nationality, there was not a question in the 2011 Census which asked about nationality. However, you may find that information on those whose country of birth was Poland might be a useful alternative. Further details are shown below.

Towns are not census geographical areas and we are therefore not able to supply data at this level. Instead the statistics released so far are at the local authority level, and there will be information available for ‘built-up areas’ at a later date.

At a future date there will be statistics released from the census question on Passports held, should the information on country of birth not be suitable for your purposes.

Regarding your particular requests 1), 4), 5) and 6)- information on Country of Birth is available for England and Wales and at local authority level in Quick Statistics table QS 203EW (782 Kb Excel sheet) .

For information on Polish residents from the Scotland 2011 Census, you will need to contact customer@gro-scotland.gsi.gov.uk, although these data are not yet available. For reference the National Records Scotland website address is http://www.scotlandscensus.gov.uk/en/

For information on Polish residents in the Northern Ireland 2011 Census please contact Census.nisra@dfpni.gov.uk. For reference see the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency website.

With regard to your question number 2), data on country of birth broken down by age are not yet available but will be published in later releases of statistics.

For information, please see the 2011 Census outputs prospectus and schedule of release.
