Request

My FOI requests refers to the comment by Conserative Spokesmen under the coalition.

"A million new jobs have been created in the Private Sector"

As the department responsible for Statistics, you must have the details of these new jobs, so I am asking the following questions:

  1. What proportion of these new jobs, were taken by immigrants?

  2. What was the category of these jobs, i.e full time, part time, self emplloyed, partnerships, other

  3. What sort of jobs were these, marketing, Retail, Wholesale, Industry, Banking and Service industries?

  4. Provide the names of those companies that were responsible for more than 10,000 jobs

  5. Any detail you can provide on these new jobs

Response

The Office for National Statistics does not collect any statistics relating to the number of new jobs created. We therefore cannot provide any of the information you have requested concerning job creation in the private sector. Although the information you have requested is not collected, ONS does publish statistics covering similar topics which may be of interest to you. Information relating to specific companies cannot be released as ONS is legally obliged to treat this information as confidential.

ONS publishes statistics relating to both the number of people in employment and the number of jobs. The employment estimates measure the number of people in paid work which is a different, albeit similar, concept to the number of jobs as some people have more than one job. Estimates of jobs by industry are available on the National Statistics website at:
http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/lms/labour-market-statistics/december-2012/index-of-data-tables.html#tab-Jobs-tables

Estimates of the number of people in employment are available on the National Statistics website at:
http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/lms/labour-market-statistics/december-2012/index-of-data-tables.html#tab-Employment-tables

Data Tables EMP01, EMP02, EMP05 and EMP06 provide some information which is similar to the information you have requested.

Table EMP02 provides estimates of the number of people employed in the public and private sectors. No further breakdown is available for estimates of the number of people employed in the private sector. However Data Table EMP01 provides estimates of the total number of people in full-time employment, part-time employment and estimates of the number of self-employed people. All self-employed people are classified to the private sector, but the full-time and part-time employment estimates include both the private and public sectors.

Data tables EMP05 and EMP06 provides estimates of employment broken down by both country of birth and by nationality.
