A redesigned Consumer Price Indices Statistical Bulletin was introduced in July 2010 with the release of the June 2010 Consumer Prices Index (CPI) and Retail Prices Index (RPI) data. At the same time the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that the new bulletin would be reviewed in October 2010 and users were invited to provide comments that they would like considered as part of this review.
Overall, the new style bulletin has been well received and it continues to be the most consulted ONS statistical bulletin. During this period of public consultation some further changes have been suggested by users and most of these have been accepted. In summary:
-
the latest RPI 12-month rate will be included on the front page of the bulletin
-
all data previously published in the ‘old’ bulletin will continue to be made available via two different modes - the current ‘briefing tables’ pack that is published to accompany the bulletin and via the time series pages of the ONS website. No data will therefore be withdrawn from users
-
commentary will begin to be provided on the CPI series which excludes energy, food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco and on how the UK CPI compares to European inflation measures. These will be included when it is considered that these additional briefings would be helpful to users
-
to avoid the briefing alternating between the CPI and RPI inflation measures, commentary on the CPI excluding indirect taxes and CPI at constant taxes will be moved to the start of the ‘Other measures of inflation’ section of the bulletin
These further improvements will be introduced with the publication of the October 2010 bulletin on 16 November.
