Sexual orientation in the 2011 Census - background

ONS have concluded that information on sexual orientation should not be collected in the 2011 Census. This paper provides background information and summarises the reasons for this decision.

Although a question on sexual orientation is not planned for inclusion in the 2011 Census, ONS recognises the increasing requirement for this information. Therefore a programme of work is underway to develop a question that can be used on social surveys (The Sexual Identity Project). Visit the ONS Sexual Identity Project pages for more information.
