Public consultation on new orders and export new orders in the monthly Turnover and Orders in the Production and Services Industries (TOPSI) publication and the Monthly Business Survey (MBS)

Opening date: 19 March 2012
Closing date: 08 June 2012
Department: Office for National Statistics
Category: Commerce, Energy and Industry

ONS collects and publishes monthly estimates of total new orders and export new orders as part of the monthly Turnover and Orders in the Production and Services Industries (TOPSI) publication. The key user of UK New Orders data is Eurostat, who collect it from member states under the Short Term Statistics Regulation. Currently, the UK has a legal obligation to provide new orders data under the regulation. Now Eurostat is removing this requirement from the regulation due to re-focussing priorities and problems experienced in collecting these data in some member states. In the UK, the estimates are primarily used as an early indicator of future turnover or business activity.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek users’ views on the proposal to remove monthly estimates of total new orders and export new orders from the TOPSI publication, and stop collecting source data by removing the relevant questions from the Monthly Business Survey questionnaire.
