Technology at our core
From the economic future of the country, to the provision of public services, statistics are vital to every imaginable area of our lives. And vital to the production and dissemination of these statistics? Technology. Robust, effective, cutting-edge technology. IT is front and centre of ONS, driving modernisation and streamlining operations for all. Our IT professionals – and we employ more than 230 talented, knowledgeable people in technology alone - combining statistical knowledge, methodology, IT and project management to put us at the forefront of government digitalisation and data visualisation.
Work that’s far-reaching, wide-ranging
Our Information Technology professionals provide business statistical application development and support which enables us to produce and publish trusted statistics for the UK. They ensure that we are producing and sharing these statistics in the most efficient, effective way – today and in the future. They make sure that our IT infrastructure, systems and software are secure, robust and reliable; that they are capable of ever-evolving in line with business requirements and Government ICT strategies. ‘Ever-evolving’ is the key phrase here. We’ve a vibrant code line and we’re currently modernising our IT systems to converge on shared platform. Right now, we have more than 50 major development projects underway – that shows you the pace of innovation and change here.
Of course, it’s not just what we do that’s varied: we recruit IT professional with diverse specialisms and backgrounds, including architecture, analysis and testing; applications development & support in a range of technologies; database and environments management; and IT project management.
Constantly moving forwards
We’ve a clear, bold vision for IT. Our strategy to 2023 gives us clear direction for the future –in terms of what we need to do, where we need to invest, and what projects our IT professionals will be working on. That’s why we’re always looking to expand and strengthen our in-house technology capability, ensuring that our vision becomes reality.
Our IT professionals are at the heart of this drive. We’re receptive to their ideas, we value everyone’s input and are open to new ways to working, to creative thinking and to challenging conventional wisdom.
