The publication of experimental statistics on Regional Gross Value Added (Production approach) on 18 December has prompted comparison of these figures for Scotland with the official estimates for GDP, which are National Statistics.
The experimental figures use an alternative methodology which ONS is developing in order to meet European requirements. They are not yet directly comparable with existing UK figures. In January 2014 ONS will publish an article setting out alternative methods for Regional GVA (Production Approach) and invite user views.
The Scottish Government publishes estimates of GDP that as far as possible replicate the methods used to construct the UK estimate of GDP and, as indicated in the experimental statistical bulletin, these should be used when comparing Scotland's economic performance with that of the UK.
