Centroids

Median population weighted centroids for output areas, super output areas and workplace zones are available to download.

The centroid is a summary single reference point which represents how the population at census time was spatially distributed and grouped within that OA, lower layer super output area (LSOA) or middle layer super output area (MSOA). The provision of centroids allows users to get consistent and comparable best-fit allocations to a higher geography using a geographical information system.

The population weighted centroid files are available in Esri Shapefile and MID/MIF formats.

The 2011 output area, super output area and workplace zone population weighted centroids are supplied under the Open Government Licence and Ordnance Survey Open Data terms and conditions.

File Download Manager

It is suggested that a Download Manager is used to support downloading of census geography products. It is a tool that facilitates file download from the Internet. These tools are particularly useful when working with large files (such as geography spatial files) by managing the download process and managing occurrences of broken download sessions. This saves you needing to restart the download.

If you do not have a Download Manager use an Internet search engine to search 'file download manager' to discover a range of tools, both free and charged for.
