Opening date: 17 February 2012

Closing date: 30 March 2012

Department: Office for National Statistics

As part of a joint project to update the previous 2001 area classification for output areas, ONS and University College London (UCL) consulted on plans for a new 2011 UK output area classification.

The original 2001 classification was created for ONS by Dr Daniel Vickers at the University of Leeds using 2001 Census data.

The 2011 Census provided an opportunity for the 2001 output area classification to be updated using 2011 Census data and for the methodology used to create the OAC to be reviewed.

To help with the construction of a new OAC and to better understand user requirements for it, user thoughts and requirements for a new OAC through a user engagement exercise were welcomed.

The user engagement period was from 17 February 2012 to 30 March 2012 and was aimed at users of the 2001 area classification for output areas. This user engagement exercise was also relevant to anyone interested in social area classifications, encompassing geodemographics and neighbourhood classifications.
