Aim of this survey
The Quarterly Survey into Sales of Industry in Scotland - Scottish Units Only consists of two surveys, the Quarterly Survey into Sales of Industry in Scotland - Scottish Units Only, which is a statutory survey and the Quarterly Survey into Sales of Industry in Scotland - Scottish Units Only, which is voluntary.
The information supplied is used in the compilation of the Scottish Government's Quarterly Index of Scottish gross domestic product (GDP). This is an important indicator of Scotland's economic activity and is used extensively within the Scottish Government and by external economic commentators, academics and the media.

To complete the survey, you will need the following information:
- number of persons employed during the quarter
- total turnover
All information you provide is strictly confidential.

Selection criteria: trading businesses in Scotland registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay As You Earn (PAYE)
Population: varies depending on the population of UK companies with activity in Scotland
Sample: approximately 130 (statutory) 15 (voluntary)
Frequency: quarterly
Dispatch dates
Quarter 1: between 7 and 8 March
Quarter 2: between 7 and 9 June
Quarter 3: between 5 and 6 September
Quarter 4: between 5 and 6 December
Return-by dates
Quarter 1: 9 April
Quarter 2: 9 July

Quarter 4: 7 January

Your business has been selected as a business trading in Scotland, which is registered for VAT and/or PAYE or with Companies House. Your response ensures we represent your industry.
Why you have received this survey
We survey businesses of all sizes to ensure our statistics are representative of the UK economy. We select large businesses (those with 100 and over employees) for any relevant Office for National Statistics business surveys because their information is so significant.
We select some small and medium businesses, usually for a set period of time then replace them with other businesses from their industry. They are very important to us as their trading patterns are often very different to large businesses.
