Information Charter

In order for the Office for National Statistics to be the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics we must collect, hold and process personal information regarding individuals and organisations. This charter sets out how we will look after that information.

When we ask you for personal information, or we use your personal information, we undertake to:

  • ensure we are clear about why we need it

  • only ask for what we need and not collect too much or irrelevant information

  • protect it from loss, damage and unauthorised access

  • only share it with other organisations for statistical purposes when the law allows

  • treat information about organisations in the same manner as we treat personal information about individuals

  • make sure all of our staff are appropriately trained in the handling of personal information

  • use the information for statistical purposes only
