Salary
At ONS there are four pay bands which range from AA grade to senior level Grade 7.
Administrative Assistant / Administrative Officer (AA/AO)
Most posts involve working on administrative or customer support duties and require the use of a computer. Work involves daily contact with ONS staff and members of the public.
Executive Officer (EO)
This is a junior management grade which involves supervising others and undertaking a range of operations management tasks. Specific duties will depend on the requirements of the business area, but posts will typically require problem-solving, decision-making and communication skills. There may also be the opportunity to be involved in project-based work.
Higher Executive Officer / Senior Executive Officer (HEO/SEO)
This grade is the start of senior level management which requires team leadership qualities. Staff are involved in significant planning and decision-making responsibilities, which may also include budgetary control.
Grade 7 / Grade 6
A number of these senior posts involve the publication and research of analysis and may include disseminating these to the media - often through press conferences or at statistical conferences. There may also be specific requirements within the research, statistical and methodological specialisms. These posts may either be in project or operational roles. Managers at this level will also contribute to strategic planning and quality control for the organisation.
Pension
The Civil Service offers a choice between a final salary or stakeholder pension scheme. Further details of the pensions available can be found on the Civil Service Pensions website.
Premium pension scheme: this is based on time spent in the scheme, and on pay received in an individual's final year of service. Contributions by staff are 3.5 per cent of pensionable pay
Partnership pension scheme: the employer contributes on the individual's behalf to a stakeholder pension, which is a form of personal pension. These contributions vary according to the age of the employee, and if an employee is able to match the contributions to a maximum of 3 per cent of pensionable earnings
