200 years of the census

To celebrate the bicentenary of the census in Britain, the Office for National Statistics (ONS), together with the Public Record Office, delved into the archives of census taking during the last two centuries to reveal stories and facts which reflected the great changes which had taken place.

It takes a local view of the census since 1801, with a set of 'Area Monitors' containing census statistics over the last 200 years. These help to paint a picture of the changes in your area, such as the numbers and types of people, the industries and jobs, as well as some thought provoking facts.

The census forms of famous and notorious people from the nineteenth century, including Queen Victoria, David Lloyd George and Charles Dickens, are featured in the Hall of Fame. These forms are released as public records after 100 years of strict security.
