Census Talk

Census Talk is the Office for National Statistics (ONS) external newsletter providing an update for local authorities, community groups, census users and other stakeholders on the preparations and plans for the 2011 Census in England and Wales.

The Winter 2009 edition of Census Talk reflects on the success of our census rehearsal in October and the November output consultation roadshows. We explain how we will use this experience to fine tune our procedures and systems to make sure all goes smoothly for 2011. Find out more about how to take part in the consultation process.

Other features include:

  • the complex challenge of developing a questionnaire that is both acceptable to the public and able to capture data that will produce relevant information for census users

  • how ONS is teaming up with local authorities to boost response rates and achieve accurate population estimates for their areas

  • the importance of the national address register and progress to date
