Census Coverage Survey

To make sure the published census results are an accurate picture of the population, an independent survey - the Census Coverage Survey (CCS) - is carried out after the census. The households and people counted in the CCS are matched with those recorded in the census to allow Office for National Statistics (ONS) to estimate the number and the characteristics of people not included on a census questionnaire.

Unlike the census, where each household is asked to complete a questionnaire, the Census Coverage Survey asks somebody in each sampled household to take part in a short doorstep interview to provide basic details on each person living there. Similar interviews will also be carried out with people living in 'communal establishments', such as guest houses or care homes.

When is it taking place?

Ahead of the full Census Coverage Survey in 2011, there will be a rehearsal of the survey in late 2009 to accompany the 2009 Census Rehearsal.

CCS staff will be undertaken fieldwork in the following areas at the following times:

Survey Area Time
Census Coverage Survey Rehearsal Areas in Newham, Lancaster, and Isle of Anglesey 23rd November-17th December 2009
Census Coverage Survey Areas throughout England and Wales 9th May - 2nd June 2011

How do I know if it’s a CCS interviewer?

If an interviewer visits you, you can check that the interviewer is genuine by asking to see their ID card, which will carry their name and photo. The interviewer will not ask to enter your home. If you are still unsure, please phone the Census Coverage Survey Helpline on 0300 0200 905.

Is my information secure?

The information you provide as part of the survey is protected by law and treated in the strictest of confidence in accordance with the UK Statistics Authority's Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
