Web Development

An improved website is in development

Our website is the main way people access our outputs.

It is important for the site to be straightforward, so that everyone can find the information they need. It also has to be easy to use and re-use the information for any purpose.

Research and feedback showed that the website could be much improved. ONS therefore made it a high priority to produce a new and improved website to be of more value to our users.

The Web Development Programme was initiated in the spring of 2009 to achieve this. It is well on course to deliver the improved website, with an improved search and navigation allowing users to find and use the information they are looking for.

The programme will also provide a mechanism (known as an API) through which other parties will be able to directly access ONS statistics for use in their own systems.

The initial release in early 2011 will be followed by subsequent releases that will provide additional facilities for users to allow customisation and better interaction with data.

The design of the new website has followed a user-centred design process, putting user’s needs first.

Further information will be provided closer to website’s release.
