Quarterly Capital Expenditure Inquiry
The Quarterly Capital Expenditure Inquiry (CAPEX) collects information on capital expenditure from businesses in the UK. Businesses receive a questionnaire which asks for information including the value of acquisitions and disposals during a given quarter.
CAPEX data are used to measure changes in the economy so that the Government can monitor and formulate economic policies. Other users include the Bank of England, HM Revenue and Customs, Eurostat and economists.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) uses the results to estimate Gross Fixed Capital Formation, which is part of the expenditure measure of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) .
