Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
This page contains information concerning geographical data on investment overseas by a UK company or investment in the UK by a foreign company.
Direct investment refers to investment that adds to, deducts from, or acquires a lasting interest in an enterprise operating in an economy other than that of the investor. The investor's purpose is to have an effective voice in the management of the enterprise. In order to do so, a direct or indirect holding of 10 per cent or more of the issued voting share capital needs to be held in the enterprise.
The latest Balance of Payments Pink Book details foreign direct investment. More information on the Pink Book is available by following the related link.
Direct investment is a financial concept and is not the same as capital expenditure on fixed assets. It covers only the money invested in a related concern by the parent company with the concern having the discretion of how to use it. A related concern may also raise money locally without reference to the parent company. The investment figures are published on a net basis.
Key changes are being made to the current FDI questionnaire. The amended questionnaire will be used for the annual FDI questionnaire from April 2010.
